We accept most credit cards and by prior arrangement only, payment by cheque made payable to Stiles & Bates.
If you wish to pay for an internet order by cheque, please email us before placing the order.
Orders will only be accepted when accompanied by an acceptable payment method.
If we are unable to fulfil the complete order we will contact you for advice and in any event, only charge credit/debit cards for the goods sent unless instructed otherwise.
Alternatively, email us with your requirements but please do not send credit card details by email.
As well as having a secure shopping cart on the online shop, we also have a Special Order secure page which we can advise for special quotes or items not in the website or catalogue (such as cutting lists, odd blanks etc.) and we can accept credit cards securely by this means.
For such order we can of course accept payment by cheque as detailed above.

The appropriate carriage charge will now show in your basket during the Checkout process with certain postcode and overseas address exceptions as detailed below.
Please note that we do not send timber, finishing products and most machinery overseas.
Carriage is the means by which we get our goods to you as quickly and as economically as possible.
We always do our best to reduce your carriage costs, (often below what we pay) so will send by the lowest cost and most reliable method we can find, and where we can, will squeeze as many goods into the same consignment and only charge you once.
In the past, we have tried sending blanks by post, but how big is a blank?
Now, we send almost all blanks on a carrier contract and have found them to be cost effective and very reliable.
We do however make some exceptions at our discretion and list them below.
If it all seems complicated, this is because we try our best to save you a few bob, and because all those white vans have to be paid for!
Charges apply to Mainland UK, Scottish Lowlands and Wales as defined by our carriers.
1) ALL TIMBER/WOOD BLANKS (Except pen blanks, which we treat as Accessories). £9.50 Carrier charge.
2) OTHER GOODS - tools & accessories (except timber, machinery* and hazardous products). £4.90 Postal charge for orders up to £50.00 in value.
3) Tool and Accessory orders over £50.00 (except timber, machinery and some glass) and finishing products) No charge.
4) *Machinery includes all machines and some heavy machine parts
5) ALL FINISHING PRODUCTS and hazardous substances.
We cannot send hazardous substances (liquids or solid) by Royal Mail or ParcelForce, who are liable to destroy all contents of a package containing such substances (however small) without notification or recompense.
As a consequence, all ‘hazardous’ products can only be sent by APC. The minimum charge for orders that include ‘hazardous’ substances is £9.50.
Sorry - we don’t make the rules. They are totally ridiculous and pea brained given the small quantities involved and if that is non-PC, great!
Because of this rule, we can no longer send any ‘hazardous’ substances to the Scottish islands, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
Exceptions: Solely at our discretion and not negotiable, we may send some timber/blank orders by post or for a lower charge
than our normal carrier rate. Typically, this will be on an order for a small wood blank.
All the above charges apply to Mainland UK, Scottish Lowlands and Wales as defined by our carriers.
Special carrier rates apply to Highlands and Islands of Scotland:
Postcodes AB37 & 38, 46 to 52. FK19 to 21. ALL HS & IV postcodes.
KA27 & 28. KW1 to 17. ALL PA postcodes. PH15 to 26, 30 to 44, 49 & 50. ALL ZE postcodes.
We welcome collection by customers own carriers and have recently had Highlands collections arranged by myhermes
Minimum carrier charge for Scottish Highlands, Islands and postcodes BT, IM and TR21-25 is £18.50.
Special rates may also apply to postcodes BT, IM and TR21-25.
The carrier charge to the Isle of Wight is £18.50
Postal rates are the same for all of the UK.
Pallet charges will be higher, please ask for quote.
Islands (including the Channel Islands) Northern Ireland and further may be higher, please ask us to quote.
Postal rates to Northern Ireland are the same as all UK.
Carrier charges on machined timber will be quoted at cost.
All carriage charges include VAT @ 20% to UK and EU addresses except the Channel Islands.

Our routine for overseas orders is to quote carriage/shipping on each order individually.
We do it this way rather than making a blanket charge that would overcharge average orders.
For this reason, orders made by overseas customer will not show a carriage charge at checkout.
Once we see the order, we will weigh and value the order, then email with an exact carriage charge.
Although you will be asked to give card details when placing the order, your card is not charged at this stage – payment is merely 'reserved' by SagePay.
At no stage do we see any card details, SagePay handle this too.
Overseas orders made without card details may be cancelled without notice because we will not accept card details by email or telephone for overseas orders. This is for reasons of card holder protection
If you agree to the carriage charge (simply by replying to our carriage advice email), we have the facilty (with your agreement) to add the carriage charge to the goods value when processing the order.
We then ask SagePay to release full payment to us including the carriage charge.
If you do not agree to the carriage charge, or if we do not hear from you within 5 days, we cancel the order, SagePay revert the 'reservation' and we hope we might be of service another day.
Be aware that in common with many businesses sending emails, our emails can end up in your Spam folder, so do check this folder if you do not see our email promptly in you Inbox.
Please note that we do not send timber, finishing products and most machinery overseas.

|Returns & Refunds|
For all the terms and conditions it is possible to devise, our success depends upon supplying quality timber and goods to customers.
We are well aware that you have a choice of suppliers and that we could lose your custom through one faulty blank, so although we know most customers would prefer to select their own timber, we hope you will allow us to do this for you with confidence.
You will want to receive these items as described and be pleased by your choice; we for our part, would like your repeat business.
If problems do arise, we can most probably sort it out over the telephone and as always, make that extra effort to be helpful.
Our formal Terms and Conditions:
All orders for goods shall be deemed to be an offer by the purchaser to buy the goods pursuant to these conditions and acceptance of their delivery shall be conclusive evidence of the purchaser’s acceptance of these conditions.
We reserve the right to decline or refuse orders.
Under the terms of the Consumer Protection Act (Distance Selling Regulations 2000) you may cancel your order at any time until delivery and for a period of seven days after delivery. Special orders excluded.

In exceptional circumstances however, we do reserve the right to alter prices during the life of this catalogue and without notice. DESCRIPTION OF GOODS. Images in this website may not be to scale.
All goods are described to the best of our knowledge. Goods may not be exactly as shown in the images due to manufacturers’ ongoing modifications and because the printing process may adversely affect colours. Goods are sold subject to availability. Customers must assume responsibility for the goods being suitable for purposes required. We accept no liability for losses, damage or injuries howsoever caused by the use of such goods, nor losses due to the unavailability of goods. If goods are out of stock or due for preparation or machining, we will contact customers for advice.
TITLE. All goods remain the property of Stiles & Bates until paid for in full.
SIZES. We cut all planks oversize to allow full thickness when dry. However, all sizes shown are nominal and subject to variance due to shrinkage or machining.
WEIGHTS. Timber weights given are those taken at the time of preparation and are subject to loss by moisture evaporation from the timber.
MOISTURE CONTENT. Continual central heating will reduce the moisture content of timber down to between 8 and 10% and it is to this level that most cabinet making timber is kilned.
Woodturning blanks of this low mc generally have poor turning characteristics, so we only kiln down to around 14% mc. Such timber will re-absorb moisture from the air in ambient conditions. Air dried timber will generally show a surface mc of around 16% during the Summer months, rising to as much as 20% during Winter. Core moisture content of kiln and air dried blanks over 21/2" thick can be higher than the surface reading by as much as 4%. Part seasoned is a term we use to describe timber which has been drying for over six months and will generally have a moisture content below 28%.
RETURN OF GOODS. In the event of goods arriving damaged or unsuitable for use, please contact us by telephone first or in writing within five days. Carriage charges and insurance on returned goods are at the customer’s cost and risk and we reserve the right not to compensate for these costs.
We reserve the right not to make refunds for goods on which work has commenced or on used goods.
A valid receipt will be required for returned goods.

All of our users' information, not just the sensitive information mentioned above, is restricted in our office. Only employees who need the information to process mail orders are granted access to personally identifiable information.
Our employees must use password-protected applications when dealing with this information.
All credit and debit card transactions placed through our website are handled by SagePay who act as a secure gateway to our bank.
We do not see any card details at any stage.
This security protocol is the latest requirement made by the banks to further increase online transactions.
When you give your card details in the checkout process, SagePay reserve payment which we then release when processing the order.
We do not thefore make any charge to your card until we have the goods ready to go and have processed the order.
Where we add a carriage charge (on overseas orders for instance), this is aded to the total before we request release of payment from SagePay.
