Homegrown Variety Bag

With a steady stream of boys and girls taking up woodturning for the first time or maybe since school days, we are often asked which are the best timbers to start with. The easiest timbers to work with are those that are hard enough to be firm and take fine detail, yet soft enough to yield to the cut. Compare say, a firm cheese to a hard, dry vegetable. Almost invariably, the ‘homegrown’ or temperate hardwoods are the easiest, starting with sycamore (or any maple), beech and ash. Oak, yew, cherry and elm are probably the next four and at the other end of the scale are the ‘exotics’ purple heart and leadwood; the former being hard and fibrous and the latter as hard as bullets. There is also the question of cost – better to mess up the less expensive blanks than the tempting exotics and better still to practice on free logs or branchwood. Going by the popularity of the Dalmann Variety Bags which are a sample of some of their Mozambique exotics, we have decided to put together our own specific variety bags of homegrowns.
