Changes to our carriage charges coming into effect 12th September 2011.
The appropriate carriage charge will now show in your basket during the Checkout process with certain postcode and overseas address exceptions as detailed below.
Please note that we do not send timber, finishing products and most machinery overseas.
OUR CARRIER SERVICE IS 48 HOURS. POST IS SENT FIRST CLASS.
Carriage is the means by which we get our goods to you as quickly and as economically as possible. We always do our best to reduce your carriage costs, (often below what we pay) so will send by the lowest cost and most reliable method we can find, and where we can, will squeeze as many goods into the same consignment and only charge you once. In the past, we have tried sending blanks by post, but how big is a blank? Now, we send almost all blanks on a carrier contract and have found them to be cost effective and very reliable.
We do however make some exceptions at our discretion and list them below. If it all seems complicated, this is because we try our best to save you a few bob, and because all those white vans have to be paid for!
Charges apply to Mainland UK, Scottish Lowlands and Wales as defined by our carriers.
ALL TIMBER/WOOD BLANKS in the website (Except pen blanks which we regard as Accessories)
£9.50 Carrier charge
ALL OTHER GOODS - tools & accessories (except timber, machinery*, some glass items and finishing products)
£3.95 Postal Charge for orders up to £100 in value.
Tool and Accessory orders over £100 (except timber, machinery, some glass* and finishing products)
No charge.
*Machinery includes all machines, some heavy machine parts and some glass items, all of which will be sent at cost or less, as showing in the online ‘Basket’ when the order is placed.
ALL FINISHING PRODUCTS and hazardous substances.
We cannot send hazardous substances (liquids or solid) by Royal Mail so use our carrier service to send these products.
As a consequence, our finishing products can only be sent by carrier so the minimum charge for orders that include hazardous substances is £9.50.
Exceptions: Solely at our discretion and not negotiable, we may send any order by post for a lower carriage charge than shows in the basket and charge you at the reduced amount accordingly.
All the above charges apply to Mainland UK, Scottish Lowlands and Wales as defined by our carriers.
Special rates apply to Highlands and Islands of Scotland - postcodes IV, HS, KA27-28, KW, PA20-49, PA60-78, PH17-26, PH30-44, PH49-50, ZE.
Special rates also apply to postcodes BT, IM and TR21-25
Where an order for machinery is made from the above Special rates postcodes and for ALL orders to overseas addresses, the system will prompt you to email us for advice of this charge.
Although you will be asked to enter card details during the Checkout process, we do not charge the card until we are processing the goods and have them ready to send. If you do not agree our carriage request quotation we will securely cancel the transaction and hope to be of service another day.
Carriage charges for Special Orders (items not in our website, such as timber prepared to a cutting list) will be quoted at cost.
Updated 5th January 2012
Update 10th May 2013
Despite Royal Mail recently ramping prices, we have not altered our postal charges but have regrettable had to apply a new £6.00 carrier surcharge made by ParcelForce on all Isle of Wight deliveries. Back to Top

| Overseas Orders |
|
Our routine for overseas orders is to quote carriage/shipping on each order individually.
We do it this way rather than making a blanket charge that would overcharge average orders.
For this reason, orders made by overseas customer will not show a carriage charge at checkout.
Once we see the order, we will weigh and value the order, then email with an exact carriage charge.
Although you will be asked to give card details when placing the order, your card is not charged at this stage – payment is merely reserved by SagePay.
At no stage do we see any card details, SagePay handle this too.
If you agree to the carriage charge (simply by replying to our carriage advice email), we add it to the goods value when processing the order, then ask SagePay to release full payment to us.
If you do not agree to the carriage charge or if we do not hear from you within 5 days, we cancel the order and hope we might be of service another day.
Be aware that in common with many businesses sending emails, our emails can end up in your Spam folder, so do check this folder if you do not see our email promptly in you Inbox.
Please note that we do not send timber, finishing products and most machinery overseas.

| Returns & Refunds |
|
For all the terms and conditions it is possible to devise, our success depends upon supplying quality timber and goods to customers. We are well aware that you have a choice of suppliers and that we could lose your custom through one faulty blank, so although we know most customers would prefer to select their own timber, we hope you will allow us to do this for you with confidence. You will want to receive these items as described and be pleased by your choice; we for our part, would like your repeat business. If problems do arise, we can most probably sort it out over the telephone and as always, make that extra effort to be helpful.
Our formal Terms and Conditions: All orders for goods shall be deemed to be an offer by the purchaser to buy the goods pursuant to these conditions and acceptance of their delivery shall be conclusive evidence of the purchaser’s acceptance of these conditions. We reserve the right to decline or refuse orders. Under the terms of the Consumer Protection Act (Distance Selling Regulations 2000) you may cancel your order at any time until delivery and for a period of seven days after delivery. Special orders excluded.
PRICES. Prices include VAT @ 20% (except books which are zero rated) which is subject to change by legislation. Prices in this website are based upon our current hard copy catalogue and are intended to be held for the life of this catalogue. In exceptional circumstances however, we do reserve the right to alter prices during the life of this catalogue and without notice. If prices are altered we will of course contact customers for advice before completing orders.
We may make special offers and clearance sales in the website which ae not shown in our hard copy catalogue. We reserve the right not to participate in all special offers or promotions made by our suppliers. PRICE ERRORS. We try not to make mistakes but do reserve the right to amend price errors at the point of sale. DESCRIPTION OF GOODS. Images in this website may not be to scale.
All goods are described to the best of our knowledge. Goods may not be exactly as shown in the images due to manufacturers’ ongoing modifications and because the printing process may adversely affect colours. Goods are sold subject to availability. Customers must assume responsibility for the goods being suitable for purposes required. We accept no liability for losses, damage or injuries howsoever caused by the use of such goods, nor losses due to the unavailability of goods. If goods are out of stock or due for preparation or machining, we will contact customers for advice. TITLE. All goods remain the property of Stiles & Bates until paid for in full. SIZES. We cut all planks oversize to allow full thickness when dry. However, all sizes shown are nominal and subject to variance due to shrinkage or machining. WEIGHTS. Timber weights given are those taken at the time of preparation and are subject to loss by moisture evaporation from the timber. MOISTURE CONTENT. Continual central heating will reduce the moisture content of timber down to between 8 and 10% and it is to this level that most cabinet making timber is kilned. Woodturning blanks of this low mc generally have poor turning characteristics, so we only kiln down to around 14% mc. Such timber will re-absorb moisture from the air in ambient conditions. Air dried timber will generally show a surface mc of around 16% during the Summer months, rising to as much as 20% during Winter. Core moisture content of kiln and air dried blanks over 21/2" thick can be higher than the surface reading by as much as 4%. Part seasoned is a term we use to describe timber which has been drying for over six months and will generally have a moisture content below 28%. RETURN OF GOODS. In the event of goods arriving damaged or unsuitable for use, please contact us by telephone first or in writing within five days. Carriage charges and insurance on returned goods are at the customer’s cost and risk and we reserve the right not to compensate for these costs. We reserve the right not to make refunds for goods on which work has commenced or on used goods. A valid receipt will be required for returned goods. E. & O. E. When our order form asks users who are buying our products to enter sensitive information such as address and credit card details, that information is encrypted and is protected with the best encryption software in the industry - SSL. While on a secure page, such as our payment page, the padlock icon on the bottom of Web browsers such as Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when users are just 'surfing'.
While we use SSL encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also do everything in our power to protect user-information off-line. All of our users' information, not just the sensitive information mentioned above, is restricted in our office. Only employees who need the information to process mail orders are granted access to personally identifiable information.
Our employees must use password-protected applications when dealing with this information.
All credit and debit card transactions placed through our website are handled by SagePay who act as a secure gateway to our bank.
We do not see any card details at any stage.
This security protocol is the latest requirement made by the banks to further increase online transactions.
When you give your card details in the checkout process, SagePay reserve payment which we then release when processing the order.
We do not thefore make any charge to your card until we have the goods ready to go and have processed the order.
Where we add a carriage charge (on overseas orders for instance), this is aded to the total before we request release of payment from SagePay. Back to Top |
